  1. The speed of sound is much less than the speed of light, so even when the thunder is very close one sees the lightning before hearing the thunder. Light travels roughly a million times faster than sound meaning that almost any distance between observer and storm is sufficient for lightning to be seen first and the sound heard afterwards.

  3. Oooooh, we’ve learnt about this one. Sound is a longitudinal wave and hence travels slower in air than light, which is a latitudinal wave. That’s why you can see the lightning before the thunder!!

    1. The fact that light travels faster than the speed of sound is why we can estimate the closeness of the lightning storm. It is not where the noise actually comes from…or I may have read the question wrong. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Speed of sound and light and their differences is ok. The question is to be asked next would be where is the sound and light coming from? How and why. Are they created during thunder storms.. but matter can neither be created nor destroyed. In that case where or what got transformed to sound and light.. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
